There are two Black Knights waiting for you in very confined spaces. Unless you are confident enough to parry their attacks, draw them out into open areas where you can fight more freely. It's not the "sweet spot" because this works identically on varying weapons. What's actually happening is the riposte or backstab, which is generally 1 or 2 punches for minimal damage and then the crit hit, is logging as 1 hit of the weapon, and then the crit hit. So instead of a grab/punch for 15 damage before the crit, it's a bonus, free hit
Im sure a lot of you guys who played Dark Souls 1 saw this happen a bunch. The new backstab mechanic in Dark Souls 2 doesnt allow this. It's funny how a lot of the weird online mechanics in Dark Souls 1 were such a happy accident - sure they were broken, but they came together in a way that it wasnt nearly as frustrating as it could have been."
DS1 had impossible to avoid backstabs that literally became any high level PVP, and Dark Souls 2 had still really hard to avoid backstabs, which were often abused by people wearing gear that completely prevents backstabs to them.
I am certain on what I have said though. However consider that with the nuance of difference between the backstab attack animations of the dagger and straight sword, the times where one would whiff and not work and the other actually would work would probably be incredibly few anyways.

Some enemies are immune to critical hits but can still be parried. 4. Parrying works in a group of enemies, while backstabbing gets you hit by the other enemies more easily. Especially in lower Undead Burg and Anor Londo, trying to fish for backstabs just results in you getting backstabbed by other enemies.
